History of the CEDES Don Bosco Band

Founded in 1965, the CEDES Don Bosco Band (BCDB) was created alongside the founding of the Don Bosco Technical School, originally located in Barrio Don Bosco, San José, Costa Rica. From the very beginning, the band has been a symbol of excellence, discipline, and social transformation through music. In 2001, with the school's move to the modern CEDES Don Bosco educational complex in Concepción Arriba de Alajuelita, the band was strengthened as a national artistic benchmark.

Throughout nearly six decades of history, the band has been led by only three directors, showing an unusual level of stability. Its current director is Maestro Luis Fernando Solano Gamboa, who leads with passion and commitment, fostering not only musicians but also integral human beings.

Today, the band is made up of 280 members, including active students and alumni from the Centro de Enseñanza Don Bosco, Escuela San Juan Bosco, and Colegio Técnico Profesional Don Bosco. Members range in age from 8 to 24, with many coming from communities in vulnerable situations.

Our journey

The CEDES Don Bosco Band has proudly represented Costa Rica internationally, performing in festivals and parades in El Salvador, Panama, and the United States (most recently in Minnesota, January 2024), with an upcoming international tour scheduled for January 2025 in Ciudad Cayalá, Guatemala. Nationally, the band has shone in over 18 editions of the Festival de la Luz in San José, winning first place in 2007, second place in 2023, and third place in 2024. It has also been featured in key national events, such as the inauguration of the National Stadium (2011), Central American and Caribbean Games (2013), NACAC Athletics Championship (2015), the 120th anniversary parade of the National Theatre (2017), Mega Bandas MEP, and presidential inaugurations (2006 and 2014).

The CEDES Don Bosco Band is known for its versatility in both repertoire and presentation formats, currently able to perform as a concert band, marching band, or big band. The band consists of: 166 wind players, 35 percussionists (Drumline and Mallets), 29 Color Guard members, 27 dancers, one director, two instructors, and a staff of 20 parents.

Total BCDB: 280 members.

Mission and Vision

The main purpose is to teach musical knowledge through the practice of an instrument, in order to joyfully serve the Lord, following the educational principles of Saint John Bosco.

Mission

To holistically educate children and youth through music education, using the band as a tool for personal and social transformation. Inspired by the values of the Salesian charism, we foster discipline, commitment, artistic excellence, and joyful service to others, offering a path of hope, development, and belonging, especially for those from vulnerable communities.

Vision

To become a leading symphonic marching band in Latin America, recognized for its musical quality, social impact, and educational model. We aim to empower new generations to become positive leaders, well-rounded professionals, and agents of change within their communities, always spreading a message of unity, peace, and joy through music.
